From the 15 October 2025

From 15 October to 04 January

A major project to restore the gilded bindings in the Cabinet des Livres is currently underway. This is an opportunity to explore the decorations that give the Duc d'Aumale's princely library its incomparable lustre.

The use of gold leaf in books took off with the appearance of the codex - an assembly of folded leaves - and with the adoption of Christianity as the official imperial religion, which encouraged the sumptuous arts of the book from the 4th century onwards. From Church treasures to royal and princely treasures to prestige books, the exhibition features a selection of exceptional books from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The focus is on the quality of the decoration, but also on the metals used and the techniques employed in the binding, illumination and writing.
